Although the market is flooded with skincare products and internet overloaded with information, it is extremely important to consult a dermatologist before you start your skincare routine. Though people are getting more aware and cautious about their skin, there are myriads of creams and lotions available in the market, making it tough for a person to choose the right product. Hence, a visit to a dermatologist becomes important. A dermatologist will examine your skin type and advise the right kind of products for you whether it is a face wash, moisturiser, sunscreen or anti-ageing cream. Here are some more reasons. Using wrong products can have side-effects

The internet is loaded with information, however, most of the time, the treatments described are from a general perspective. You could develop side-effects if you try stuff without knowing if it is right for you.

I have seen patients who have used skin lightening creams and developed more pigmentation. Similarly, there have been patients who have read home remedies for blemishes online, tried them, burnt and scarred their faces and come to me finally. Sometimes what you consider normal skin may actually be sensitive skin and using harsh ingredients can lead to allergies and rashes. Read – Do natural products have any side-effects?

Severe skin conditions need proper care

There are conditions which need a dermatologist s attention. Severe acne or pimples will not improve with over-the-counter products. If after a month of usage of an anti-acne cream, you do not see results, it is time to see a dermatologist.

You may be suffering from hormonal imbalances or polycystic ovarian syndrome. Similarly, if you have developed scars or blemishes, you should not try out treatments on your own. Let your dermatologist select the peels and lasers suitable for you.

If you see a mole or an abnormal growth on your skin which keeps growing, or darkening, you must see a dermatologist. The mole could be cancerous. The growth could be an infected cyst.

Self-diagnosis is often wrong

Make sure you consult a dermatologist for any rashes on your body. Eczema, psoriasis and other types of dermatitis are accompanied with itching and rashes. They may subside temporarily with an over-the-counter steroid cream or an anti-allergic pill but will only worsen once you stop the medication.

What you may think is severe dandruff and use anti-dandruff shampoos available in the market with no results may not be dandruff at all. For all you know, you may be suffering from seborrhoeic dermatitis or psoriasis of the scalp. See a dermatologist to treat the condition and curb hair loss.

OTC creams are not always enough

Scar reduction creams may help if the scars are superficial. However, if they are raised, thickened scars or keloids, you must consult a dermatologist as you may need intralesional injections or cryotherapy. Similarly, for depressed scars, you may need fractional laser treatment. So don’t just rely on microdermabrasions and other treatments at your local beauty parlour.

Brown skin discoloration and pigmentation reduce with over-the-counter skin lightening creams. However, the pigmentation returns when you stop using these creams. Sometimes, long term use of these creams cause thinning of skin, visible veins, sensitive skin due to a steroid present in the skin lightening cream. At times they cause more pigmentation due to hydroquinone present in the skin lightening cream. Hence, do not try over-the-counter skin lighteners. Always consult a dermatologist and seek help. No amount of expensive anti-wrinkle creams will get rid of your wrinkles. Visit a dermatologist for peels, lasers, Botox or fillers to zap those wrinkles or sagging skin.

It is always better to consult a dermatologist and use their expertise for routine skincare as well as specialised treatments in order to prevent adverse effects on your skin and to keep it healthy and young.
