An eye boil or a stye is a condition where one or more of the glands (openings) along the eyelid get blocked , and the collected fluid in the gland gets infected. Styes should be taken seriously and the child should be taken to a physician immediately. There are a number of underlying factors that can lead to stye formation such as

Uncorrected refractive errors,
Constant rubbing and scratching of the eye lid,
Fingering the lids and
Undue eye strain.

Treatment options:

Although there are a number of home remedies in the Indian culture, Dr Prachi Agases warns that parents should avoid these home remedies. Styes, if not treated properly,can lead to infection of the surrounding areas of the eye, causing a more serious and sever condition called Perceptal or Orbital Cellulitis. In this condition, the child’s eye and surrounding areas become red, swollen and the child will develop fever.

On consultation with a physician the child will be prescribe a

Topical antibiotic,
Oral antibiotic and
A course of oral anti inflammatory’s .
The doctor may also like to check the child’s eye sight for uncorrected refractive errors. Usually if the child cannot see well enough, they tend to rub their eyelids or narrow the eyes so they can see better. This leads to stye formation.

Here are some dos and don’ts of managing a stye:

Do: Give warm fermentation to the child’s eye, this will help in relieving the pain and reduce inflammation

Don’t: Try to pierce or puncture the stye, as this could lead to a more serious infection.
