Jaundice or hepatitis is a common liver disorder that may result from several abnormal medical conditions. Typically, a person with jaundice suffers from headaches, low-grade fever, nausea and vomiting, loss of appetite, itchy skin and a general sense of fatigue. The skin and the whites of the eyes turn yellow, stools turn pale and urine becomes dark. The modern system of medicine, allopathy does not have any cure for jaundice; indeed, many physicians advise patients with jaundice to get adequate rest and avoid oily foods and prescribe medicines that provide mere symptomatic relief. Neem contains several constituents that have been proved to have anti-viral action; this makes it useful in treating hepatitis that is viral in origin. Neem is also said to be capable of destroying the toxins generated in the liver. The best way to benefit from neem is to make a juice using washed neem leaves; mix about 30 ml of this juice with half its volume of honey and consume this early every morning on an empty stomach for a week.

Amla and lemon

Amla or the Indian Gooseberry is a very rich source of vitamin C. This vitamin has a strong antioxidant action and this helps to reduce liver damage that has been caused by free radical reactions. Consuming amla juice regularly can help you recover faster from jaundice. Lemon juice is an alternative remedy if you cannot get amla; lemon juice also contains vitamin C which gives it a hepato-protective (liver protective) function.

Arjuna

The bark of the Arjuna tree is most well-known for its action on the heart and the urinary system. However, the alkaloids it contains have the ability to regulate the production of cholesterol in the liver, too and this makes it a valuable drug against hepatitis. In fact, it is one of the important constituents of Liv.52, one of the most popular brands of Ayurvedic medicine for jaundice. Take about half a teaspoon of Arjuna powder (which is commercially available) and mix it with a few drops of ghee to form a paste; take this twice a day.

Guduchi

Guduchi or Amrit is a herb that is in the limelight nowadays for its anti-diabetic action but it is very effective even in the treatment of jaundice. Some animal studies have found that Guduchi helps to prevent damaging changes in hepatic cells and actually promotes the regeneration of these cells. This hepato-protective action of Guduchi makes it a good herbal remedy against jaundice. Take about one teaspoon of Guduchi powder twice daily.

Turmeric

In some parts of the country, people harbor the misconception that because turmeric has a yellow color, it should not be taken by a person with jaundice which also causes yellowing of the tissues. However, with its strong anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-microbial effect, and also its ability to shrink enlarged hepatic ducts, turmeric is one of the most effective remedies against hepatitis.Take about one-fourth teaspoon of turmeric powder in a glass of warm water thrice daily for best results.

Tomato

The red color of tomato is due to a pigment it contains called lycopene. This substance not only lends color; it also has an important action of reducing tissue damage in the liver. Drinking a glass of fresh tomato juice on an empty stomach every morning is recommended for people with jaundice.

Radish leaf juice

Radish (mooli) is good for the liver because of its action as a detoxifying agent. It helps to remove the excess of a bile pigment called bilirubin that has been produced in the liver during the course of jaundice. Take the leafy portion at the top of the radish, wash and run through a blender to get the fresh juice. Drink a glass of this juice once a day for around 10 days after you have been diagnosed with jaundice.

Jaundice is a disease that is a result of some damage to the liver or blockage of the bile duct that carries the bile secreted by the liver. In some persons, the jaundice may result from a blockage of the bile duct due to some other disease condition such as malaria, tuberculosis or typhoid. Therefore, if you do not find relief from the symptoms of jaundice even after using these home remedies for a week or so, it is good to consult a doctor for a more thorough diagnosis of your problem.
