10 dos and don’ts for new mummies

Motherhood is a wonderful experience but there are a lot of questions and apprehensions a new mother will have. Here are some tips by Dr Zinal Unadkat, a leading paediatrician, neonatologist and lactation consultant, on how to take care of your newborn. Your newborn cannot speak in words so it is important to develop a bond with your baby to understand their needs. Therefore, spend maximum time with the baby instead of relying on the maids or nannies to understand them better. Even though your baby can’t speak, they can listen so talk to them. Never leave the baby unattended as they can choke on something or fall, always make sure there is someone next to the newborn at all times. Also, keep the bed rugs, pillows and blankets at a safe distance from the nose to avoid any suffocation. Even while they sleep, don’t cover their entire face. A newborn needs ample warmth and care. As far as possible, sleep in the same room as the baby.

If the weather is too cold, make them first wear cotton inners before the woollen clothes as they can make the baby sweat too much. Also, don’t swaddle the baby around you too tightly, leave some room.

The temperature of the room in which the baby is kept should be kept constant as fluctuating temperatures can lead to colds and allergies.

Do not use strong, stimulating smells like air fresheners, cigarette smoke, incensed sticks, mosquito repellent liquids, etc as it can cause an allergy or wheezing.

Refrain from applying oil in the ears and nose and it can lead to pneumonia. Even ear buds are risky. Paediatricians advice using ear drops. Avoid kajal as well, as it can damage the baby’s eyes.

Breastfeed the baby for at least the first six months and avoid consuming alcohol as it can pass through the milk. Also avoid animal milk or preservatives and supplements for the baby. (Read: What parents of newborns ought to know)

Do not wake up the baby when it is sleeping and try and sleep when the baby sleeps to get ample rest.

Remember, motherhood is a round-the-clock job but it is also a very special time for you and your baby to bond. Do not get stressed out or overwork yourself. Take the help of maids for household chores and be positive.
